Samhain is my absolute favorite of the Sabbats. It offers a chance to reflect, and also the opportunity to have an entirely clean slate for the next cycle of the Wheel of the Year. For the last several years, my Samhain ritual has involved doing a Tarot spread for the year, along with three Goddess Oracle cards to help me focus my energies. Last night was my Samhain ritual with my New Moon Circle — the women and femmes my friends refer to as my “Amazons” — and I did my yearly reading.
Ever been called out by a handful of cards?
It’s something of a running joke with academics that the question that haunts our lives is “Shouldn’t you be writing?” It’s the one that is always, and I do mean always, in the back of my mind. So it shouldn’t have been a surprise that I laid out a whole fistful of Staves for my Samhain reading — Staves (or Wands) being associated with intellect, communication, knowledge, and intellectual pursuits. Lots of Staves. Some reversed Staves. And in the midst of it all, the all-knowing, all-seeing Queen of Staves.
And she looked at me and said, “Shouldn’t you be writing?”
And then, when I opened up my Facebook page today, there was a Suggested Post for NaBloPoMo — National Blog Posting Month.
In my world, we call that the Nerf 2×4 of Wisdom, and you best heed it.
So yes, yes, I should be writing. And so I am writing. Every day in November.
